Anti-jueteng advocates warned against Malacanang’s planting of false witnesses and other dirty tactics to undermine jueteng investigations
Anakpawis Representative Crispin Beltran today commiserated with Lingayen Archbishop Oscar Cruz and the latter’s righteous accusation that Malacanang was working overtime to by turns harass, threaten, bribe and discredit witnesses to the involvement of Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and members of the First Family in the jueteng operations in the country.
“Archbishop Cruz is single-handedly going against the jueteng operations in the country, risking his own life in the process even as Malacanang continues to block his efforts. This only goes to prove the fraudulence of the government’s assertion that it is doing its best to rid the country of the illegal numbers game – the Palace is swift to swoop down on witnesses who are brave enough to expose the truth behind jueteng, even if it means implicating the highest executive and members of the First family,” he said.
Beltran warned the Opposition and anti-jueteng advocates to be more wary against various individuals who approach them alleging that they have crucial information on jueteng that could nail down the president and other top officials. He said that at this juncture that the jueteng scandal is one of the biggest factors causing the president’s approval ratings to remain at negative levels, it’s certain that Malacanang is resorting to various underhanded tricks and tactics to undermine the investigations.
“This includes planting false witnesses who will capitulate and accuse the Opposition of forcing them to testify,” he said. “This is what is most likely the case with false witnesses Datu Ahmad Bayam and Richard Garcia. More than likely, Malacanang has a lot of dirty tricks lined up to sabotage the jueteng investigations. It’s evident that Malacanang desperately wants to ensure that neither Pres. Arroyo nor members of the First Family led by First Gentlemen Mike Arroyo, eldest son. Rep. Mikey and the president’s brother-in-law Rep. Iggy Arroyo are absolved.”
GMA using Roco’s death to issue call for reconciliation
The veteran labor leader turned lawmaker in the meantime said that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s statement that former presidential contender and ex-senator Raul Roco’s death should be taken as opportunity to reflect on the country’s political situation and for the people to unite was insulting to Sen. Roco’s memory.
“Sen. Roco used his remaining days to speak against the corruption in government and he demanded Mrs. Arroyo’s resignation. Pres. Arroyo has no shame at all and should be castigated for insulting his memory and using his death to issue a self-serving but false call for unity. There is no reconciling with a corrupt and illegitimate presidency that refuses to step down,” he said.
“It would be a more fitting tribute to Raul Roco if more Filipinos heeded his call and supported the ongoing campaigns for the Macapagal-Arroyo’s impeachment and ouster,” he said. “This is what will give justice to Roco’s memory and the principles he lived and stood for.”#
