GMA ignoring the signs and warnings at her own peril; her promises for economic reforms for development lacking in credibility

Anakpawis Representative Crispin Beltran today said that Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s attempts to justify the empty content of her state of the nation address (SONA) last Monday were futile as it is already evident that Malacanang’s tack was to keep silent on all issues concerning the credibility of the president.

In reaction to this morning’s presscon wherein Pres. Arroyo said that she was no longer going to take notice of criticisms being issued against her by the opposition, Beltran said that Mrs. Arroyo’s defiant stance was merely a front.

“As has been pointed out before, the longer Pres. Arroyo stays mum on the charges of corruption and electoral fraud against her, the worse the backlash will be. It is impossible for the presidency to continue functioning in its usual way when its credibility and legality is being questioned from all sides. The entire nation is waiting and watching over the developments in the campaign for the removal of the President, and even if Mrs. Arroyo keeps silent, this attention will not go away,’ he said.

“The reforms Mrs. Arroyo is boasting about are without doubt in the same shape and mold as the laws, programs and policies that she has also imposed on the people to the detriment of their lives and livelihood. No one is expecting miracles from Pres. Arroyo – what the Filipino people want is her resignation. She should stop issuing promises and making plans because the nation does not trust her or her administration.”

Beltran said that Pres. Arroyo can continue to ignore the signs and the warnings, but she is doing so at her own peril.

Finally, the veteran labor leader said that pres. Arroyo’s defiance will weaken in the coming days as the impeachment process continues and, more importantly, the protests against her grow bigger in number and scope. “There is no more fixing the Macapagal-Arroyo presidency. What with the resignation of various cabinet officials and the defection of former Arroyo stalwarts, the Macapagal-Arroyo administration is falling apart at the seams,’ he concluded.#
