Beltran says Y.O.U. charges against Macapagal-Arroyo government legitimate; calls on military rank-and-file and young officers to support civilian-led protests against corrupt and illegitimate presidency

Anakpawis Representative Crispin Beltran today said that if the Young Officers Union (YOU) pushes through with its declaration that it will stand to oppose the Macapagal-Arroyo administration, the YOU leaders and members should remember to keep in mind the superiority of civilian leadership. He said that the same as other sectors of Philippine society, the military especially the rank-and-file and young, still idealistic officials, have the right to express their discontent against the government’s corruption and other crimes against the Filipino people. “But they should keep in mind that the leadership of civilians in governance is primary, and the observance and respect of civil, political and human rights of all citizens can never be compromised,” he said.

Beltran said that the AFP rank-and file and young officers should stand up against their higher officials and superiors if their orders were to attack and violate the rights of civilians and the peaceful yet militant protests against the Arroyo administration. “The YOU leadership is challenged to stand up against the threats being issued the AFP leadership against civilian protests, including the threats against the safety, security and very lives of civilian demonstrators.”

The activist lawmaker said that that the YOU’s charges against the Arroyo government were legitimate and were on the level as those of people’s groups and anti-corruption watchdogs. He said, however, that the military rank-and-file and young officers also have issues to bring up against the president that are specific to their sector.

“The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is one of the most corrupt organizations in the country, mainly because of the insufferable careerism and one-up-manship among the to-brass. The supposed orientation to serve and protect civilians and the country’s patrimony and sovereignty has been nothing but an empty slogan as the corrupt military officials cooperate with the anti-national and politically repressive rulings and campaigns of successive administrations. There can never be genuine reform and rehabilitation within the Armed forces so long as the civilian leadership that orders it is also corrupt and repressive,” he said.

Finally, he appealed to members of the YOU and members of the AFP to take a stand and support the civilian-led protests against the illegitimate presidency and help bring genuine economic and political reforms in the country. #
