Presidential Truth Commission can only serve as foil to Congressional impeachment process; Pinoys see through PGMA’s ruse
Anakpawis Representative Crispin Beltran today said that the presidential truth commission is nothing but yet another delaying and diversionary tactic of Malacanang to deflect the public’s attention from the upcoming impeachment trial and the intensifying streets protests demanding Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s resignation and ouster.
“Pres. Arroyo has no credibility to call for the creation of a Truth Commission. Any body or organization established by Malacanang for the supposed purpose of uncovering the truth behind the president’s corruption and electoral fraud is inherently flawed and lacking in credibility. Independent institutions removed from the administration and the government institutions such as the academe, the clergy and people’s organizations can put up their own truth commissions, but Malacanang can’t. This palace-backed truth commission cannot be expected to be relentless and go hard on the president in the clear objective to unearth the truth,” he said.
Beltran said that if Malacanang pushes through with its plans for a truth commission-led investigations, the commission will serve as a foil to Congress’ own actions, particularly the impeachment process. He expressed confidence that the Filipino public will see through Malacanang’s ruse.
“The surveys are all consistent in pointing out the public’s disgust with the Arroyo presidency, and the people’s support for moves to remove her from office. The Truth Commission put up by the palace will not gain the respect or support from Filipinos because they now that the President is behind it and the results will most likely be biased for the president,’ he said. #
