Fellow senior citizen Beltran gives birthday reminders to PGMA on her 60th birthday

Anakpawis Representative and political detainee Crispin Beltran issued birthday reminders to President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo whose 60th birthday falls tomorrow, April 5.

"It's said that people who celebrate their birthdays should use the day to do good for other people; but President Arroyo is going to celebrate her birthday with so may economic and political issues in the country unresolved. Birthdays are times when people should take stock of their recent deeds and past experiences, and sadly, President Arroyo has to be reminded that in the last year of her existence and her presidency, there have been more extrajudicial killings of human rights activists and journalists; more attacks against progressive lawmakers and the supporters of their party-lists; and heightened political repression because of the heightened interference of the military in civilian affairs," he said.

The 74-year old Beltran said that Pres. Arroyo may be getting along in years, "But sadly it doesn't appear that she's also getting along in wisdom. It's a tragedy that she has taken to indirectly emulating the former dictator Ferdinand Marcos as her role model for president. She has started her senior-citizen years as a president who condones human rights violations and lauds the perpetrators in the Armed Forces of the Philippines," he said.

"As a senior citizen, all the more should be thinking about the welfare of the younger generation of Filipinos and what kind of government, what kind of country they will inherit. She is not serving as a good example for younger Filipinos, and certainly her economic policies attack the welfare of the older ones," he said.#
