Macapagal-Arroyo flatters the AFP to avert any possibility of the military abandoning her
In reaction to reports that Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo had once more given praised to Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) troops deployed in the Metro, Anakpawis Representative and political detainee Crispin Beltran said that he was not surprised. He said that Pres. Arroyo remains the AFP's number one patron and supporter.
"As the election nears, Macapagal-Arroyo becomes even more desperately reliant on the AFP and its support, especially since any and all plan to conduct yet another massive campaign for electoral fraud cannot succeed without the full support and cooperation of the military," he said.
"Macapagal-Arroyo will not risk alienating or displeasing the military because it is, it is the only remaining institution that's issuing support for her administration. Even as she projects herself as the AFP's commander in chief, in truth she is living in fear that the AFP might abandon her side and leave her a sitting duck, vulnerable to the calls for her resignation and ouster. She's like the master of a Rottweiler feigning control over the beast, but is actually vulnerable to the beast's bite if its chain is yanked. Macapagal-Arroyo doesn't want to be bit, so she flatters and praises the AFP."
The activist lawmaker turned legislator reiterated his appeal for leaders of the Catholic church and other religious formations to step up their calls for the immediate pull-out of troops from the communities in the Metro. He also said that AFP deployment in the provinces where the progressive party-lists are also widely-supported should also be condemned.
"Macapagal-Arroyo will no longer lift a finger on her own to order the pull-out of troops. The militarization of the urban communities are all part and parcel of the comprehensive campaign of intimidation and political harassment the Arroyo administration is enacting against the Filipino people. It is up to the concerned sectors of society to continue pushing for the withdrawal of troops," he said.
Beltran said that the attempts of the AFP to appear benefactors and benevolent protectors of the peaces are all in vain, "Because residents are not fooled as to what their real motives are. The AFP's continuing presence in the communities all the more expose the paranoia of the government, and a paranoid government is dangerous. Neither has it escaped the awareness of residents that the AFP is targeting members and sympathizers of the progressive party-lists Anakpawis, Bayan Muna and Gabriela Women's Party. Building clinics or distributing groceries are a pathetically transparent cover, and these moves do not make up for the atmosphere of unease and repression that the troops create with their very presence," he said.
Beltran said that it was imperative that the troops be made to leave the communities way before the actual election date. He said that the troops were also there to survey the voting population in communities and use the information for the government stand-by plan for fraud. "We predict that the government will try to make it appear that the communities were the AFP troops were deployed will support the administration's Team Unity as well as the party-lists funded and backed by the administration. The AFP have even established their barracks in the barangay halls and centers, as well as the immediate periphery of schools which will be used as voting precincts come May," he said.#

Anakpawis Representative and political detainee Crispin Beltran once more began fasting today in solidarity with other political detainees in the Southern Tagalog Region, specifically the Tagaytay 5 and the Mamburao 6 who have been on hunger strike for a month.
