Illegally-detained solon congratulates 2006 bar passers,
Urges them to defend the peoples' rights
While awaiting the Makati Regional Trial Court's decision on April 3 under police custody at Camp Crame, illegally-detained Anakpawis Congressman Crispin Beltran congratulated this year's new batch of bar exam passers, expressing hopes that "our new breed of young and idealistic lawyers will work to uphold genuine social reforms for the Filipino toiling masses".
"I warmly congratulate the country's new generation of lawyers. I am happy that your efforts have borne fruit, and that you will finally be starting on a new journey as advocates of truth and justice for the people. Nananalig ako na sila ay makakatulong sa pagbibigay ng hustisya sa mga mamamayan alinsunod sa tamang proseso ng batas," Beltran said.
Veteran labor leader Beltran also expressed personal wishes that "more young lawyers will also devote their strengths and talents to defending the Filipino peoples' rights".
"The progressive peoples' movement is in need of brave new people who will help us fend off the state-sponsored attacks on civil liberties and human rights," Beltran said.
"We need more young people all over the country, for instance, who will help us in the legal battle to attain justice for slain activists and labor leaders. As of March 21 2006, the Center for Trade Union and Human Rights has already documented five cases of killings of workers, trade unionists and labor advocates, an alarming tally that threatens to surpass the count of 31 killings of 2005," Beltran said.
"We also are in need of attorneys who will help out in defending job security and just wages for workers and overseas foreign workers, housing rights for the urban poor, genuine land reform for farmers and peasants, livelihood and territorial protection for fisherfolk and national minorities, and economic and political rights for women and homosexuals especially those from the ranks of the toiling masses," Beltran said.
"I fervently hope that our young lawyers will not stray towards the skewed path drawn by Arroyo's lapdogs in the Department of Justice, namely Sec. Raul Gonzales and state prosecutor Atty. Emmanuel Velasco," Beltran added. ###
