The true purpose of PGMA’s vist to the US; leaving Noli as caretaker
Anakpawis Representative Crispin Beltran today said that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo’s trip to New York was a mission of desperation as she will use the opportunity to seek the support of the United States government led by George W. Bush for her floundering administration. Beltran said that the real purpose of Mrs. Arroyo’s visit was more serious that just Arroyo attending the 2005 World Summit or the Asean-United Nations Summit.
“This is going to be a pretty jittery and somewhat mortifying trip for Pres. Arroyo. She will be facing other heads of state who are without doubt quite aware of what’s going on in the Philippines, including the strong public clamor for Mrs. Arroyo’s removal on the basis of corruption, electoral fraud and undermining of the people’s economic welfare,” he said. “She might put up a brave front and insist that crisis is over with the death of the impeachment complaint against her, but nothing can be farther from the truth.”
The veteran labor leader turned lawmaker said that Mrs. Arroyo is most likely to approach US Pres. Bush to seek his word that he and his government will continue to stand by her administration. “There’ll be bargaining and haggling here, I bet. The US wants the Philippine government to impose an anti-terrorism law and to remove all remaining barriers to free trade and investment, thus giving foreign corporations full right to plunder Philippine resources. The new tax measures have already been railroaded and are poised for implementation upon the pressure of foreign creditors. Mrs. Arroyo will most likely issue more promises on the anti-terror bill and the complete lifting of tariffs on imported products as well the limit on foreign ownership of vital national industries,” he said.
In the meantime, Beltran said that Pres.Arroyo’s statement that she is leaving Vice-President Noli de Castro as caretaker was of no consequence. “Mr. de Castro like Arroyo has no credibility to lead. For the most part, judging from his lackluster performance and dumb silence on the mounting economic problems of the country - not to mention the escalating political crisis – he is mostly a token vice-president, and now a mere symbolic figure and stand in for the president,” he said.
“Mr. de Castro has remained mum all this time, and it’s not at all a credit to him or to his prudence. The Philippines is in a political uproar and the economic crisis steadily worsening but he has not said or done anything by way of offering solutions. There is no way that he should be allowed to ascend to higher office- - he does not even deserve to occupy the position he has now. Needless to say, we do not expect great things from the vice-president,” he said.#
