Solon bats for People’s Tribunal to settle charges against PGMA; evidence and testimonies should be presented to the public via public tribunal

Anakpawis Representative Crispin Beltran today said that all legal venues and democratic process must be exhausted to ensure that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is removed from office and made to account for the charges against her of electoral fraud, betrayal of public trust, corruption, and massive human rights violations. He said that the shocking defeat of the impeachment complaint against Arroyo in Congress leaves the Filipino people and the various people’s organizations representing them to resort to more democratic processes and means to uphold justice.

Beltran said that even as certain quarters call for the elevation of the impeachment complaint to the Supreme Court via an appeal to the decision laid down by Congress last Tuesday, it was more crucial that the biggest force be gathered for the streets protests. He also said that since the evidence strengthening the charges stated in the impeachment complaint has been rejected by Congress through the Justice Committee, the complaint should be heard by the parliament of the streets. “A people’s tribunal can and should be established wherein the charges against Mrs. Arroyo be heard, deliberated upon, and then decided on. The pro-impeachment lawmakers who were refused the right to present the cases against Mrs. Arroyo can present their evidence and their testimonies in this tribunal, and the judges can be the representatives of the major sectors representing the Filipino people,” he said.

The veteran labor leader turned legislator that filing a case at the Supreme Court could take months and years, and the issue regarding the corrupt and illegitimate Arroyo administration needs to be settled at the soonest possible time. “There is no other alternative but to settle this issue now. Pres. Arroyo has lost all moral and legal legitimacy to lead, and it is only through the underhanded machinations and maneuvers of her allies in Congress that she remains in power. The polarization between the pro and anti-Arroyo forces is almost complete, and further exposing the charges against her and presenting the evidence to the public will cement her fate,” he said.#
