Red and White Ribbons to replace Peach impeach pins in Congress as struggle to remove corrupt presidency intensifies
Anakpawis Representative Crispin Beltran today said that the peach-colored ribbons worn by pro-impeachment legislators will soon turn red and white as the political temperature escalates and the call for Pres. Gloria acapagal-Arroyo’s ouster takes over the calls for her impeachment. “In this case, red stands for People Power, and white for the truth which Congress refused entry. Pres. Arroyo’s refusal to stand trial leaves us with no other option but to take the case to the streets and strengthen the verdict against her there. Her refusal to go through the impeachment process can already be construed as a sign of guilt: if she’s not guilty of anything, why did she and her allies block the venue which will help her prove her innocent if she really is?”
“The impeachment process because of the manipulation of Pres. Arroyo’s allies has been reduced to nothing but a game of numbers, a matter of influence peddling and peer-pressure. How then can Pres. Arroyo even again convince the people of the so-called superiority of the rule of law when she and her allies bullied their way to defeat the legal process that could have, ideally, let to the revelation of the truth?”
Beltran said that Pres. Arroyo and her allies in the House are mistaken if they even for a moment believe that that the crisis is over. He said that the unceremonious junking of the amended complaint by Arroyo’s allies in Congress has convinced more Filipinos that the process of law is nothing but a sham because it’s essentially controlled and manipulated by a powerful few. “The junking of the amended complaint was an insult and attack against the Filipino people’s demand that investigations into the charges of corruption, betrayal of public trust and electoral fraud against Pres. Arroyo be conducted. Everyone wants to know the truth – the details and nitty gritty of the controveries surrounding the President, and people will never be satisfied with Mrs. Arroyo and her spokespersons’ droning denials,” he said.
He added that the steep rise in the prices of oil and petroleum products, the pending implementation of the added 10% value added tax, and the increasing electricity rates were also important factors why people want Mrs. Arroyo out.
He urged fellow lawmakers who supported the impeachment complaint to not give up the fight to expose the corruption and illegitimacy of the incumbent presidency and instead support the strong mass movement that’s demanding Pres. Arroyo’s ouster. He said that there was no other option to take given that Arroyo has flatly refused to resign or allow herself to be impeached. “How else can a corrupt and anti-people president be made to account for abuse of power and authority but to have her first removed from office? It is Mrs. Arroyo and her allies themselves who are forcing Filipinos out into the streets to demand her ouster.”
The veteran labor leader turned lawmaker said that beginning today, the call for Pres. Arroyo’s ouster will again take center stage. He said that the public has learned yet another valuable lesson in politics: “The rule of law is only as reliable as those who swear to uphold it. In the case of the impeachment process, the majority in the House upheld PGMA’s corrupt and illegitimate leadership at the expense of the law and the Filipino people’s interest and demand for justice. They worked diligently to shut out the truth,” he said. #
