Palaparan as national security adviser will be virtual exoneration for the butcher

Anakpawis Representative and political detainee Crispin Beltran today said that Pres. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo will once more be affirming her commitment to protect human rights butcher and mastermind of hundreds of extrajudicial killings Jovito Palparan if she chooses the latter to replace National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales who is reportedly resigning to run for a congressional seat in Bataan.

"Jovito Palparan replacing Norberto Gonzales as national security adviser is like a higher-ranking demon taking over a lesser demon's post. If Pres. Arroyo should be ordering Palparan's immediate arrest and prosecution instead of considering him for a government post. If she does choose him as Gonzales' replacement, she should also stop all the pretense that she is taking action on the issue of political killings because she already has the mastermind right next to her and whispering in her ear," he said.

Taking advice from Palparan on national security issues and acting on it would further worsen the human rights situation, he added. "Malacanang is already completely exonerating Palparan and giving him full immunity by refusing to acknowledge the report of the Melo Commission finding Palparan guilty of targeting and masterminding the execution of hundreds of political activists and human rights workers," he said. "Palparan is trying to backpedal on his documented campaign of terrorism against human rights activists and members of progressive party-lists, but no one is buying it. Pres. Arroyo might as well give the rude finger to the international community if she promotes Palparan and gives him a post in Malacanang."

The detained lawmaker and Anakpawis first nominee in the meantime said that Norberto Gonzales' bid to be Bataan's representative in congress should also be thwarted. He said that Gonzales if elected in the House would serve as another one of Macapagal-Arroyo's spokespersons.

"He has no genuine legislative agenda that we can see – his main mission in life is to demonize the progressive party-lists and advocate more militarist measures to crackdown on civil liberties and democratic rights of Filipinos much-disgusted with the Macapagal-Arroyo government," he said. "Gonzales is essentially a nobody who made a name for himself as a war-monger and an advocate for the destruction the progressive party-lists," he said.

Stock market problems no immediate discernible impact on consumers, but negative effects could be felt in the long-run

Anakpawis Rep. Crispin Beltran today said that the strong jitters in the stock market has no immediate discernible impact on ordinary Filipinos and consumers, but pointed out that if the plunge in the stock market continues, businesses might suddenly jack the prices of their products and rates of services they provide.

"It's all about making money and keeping profits up. If the big businesses and investors in the country are severely affected by the sudden fall in the market, they might predictably decide to bolster their businesses by hiking prices and implementing sudden cutbacks and lay-offs."

"It has already been documented that while stock market growth does not automatically and even seldom translate to economic progress and prosperity for the rest of the country, fluctuation in the market impacts negatively on the public in the long run because investors take back their losses by jacking their prices and rates. Placing massive investments in stocks does not make an important contribution to national economic growth the way agricultural or heavy industrial development does. For the most part, it's only private investors and businesses who benefit from stock trading," he said.#
