GMA throws all caution to the wind and ignores even warnings against her soul's peril by going against Church leaders; CBCP should rethink stand supporting Malacanang

Anakpawis Representative Crispin Beltran today said that the illegitimate Macapagal-Arroyo presidency has thrown all caution to the wind as well as irid all pretences of being a believer in democracy. He said that it was a telling sign that Malacanang refuses to apologize for last Friday's violent dispersal of the prayer rally led by the church leaders of the KME.

"Malacanang and its various spokespersons' explanations and justifications for the increasing limits on the constitutionally-guaranteed and universally-upheld rights of assembly and expression are chilling signs that there is full intent to impose martial law," he said. "Mrs. Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has even taken to ignoring warnings that her own soul is in mortal peril by going up against leaders of the Catholic church and attacking its members," he said.

Beltran lauded the efforts of the church leaders of the KME to expose the increasing political repression of the administration and said that the Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) should follow suit. He said that the CBCP's previous statements declaring support for the admnistration and supporting the ban on rallies and street actions via the calibrated preeemptive response policy was a big disappointment for many Filipinos.

"We hope that the CCCP leadership and members would take a more progressive and pro-people stand on the issue of Macapagal-Arroyo's increasing tyranny and the worsening attacks against civil and human rights. Malacanang is trying to justify the attacks as necessary actions to protect the public peace, but in truth it is protecting nothing but itself. Macapagal-Arroyo's stubborn and immoral determination to cling to power despite her widespread unpopularity biuds ill for the public peace, and all signs point towards the imposition of martial law. We hope that the CBCP will rethink its stand and choose to side with the Filipino people and their struggle to unseat a corrupt and illegitimate presidency that is quickly transforming itself into an unholy dictatorship," he concluded.#
